From the book:
But al-Muʿtazilah denied seeing Allāh, arguing that the believers do not see their lord with their eyes because it is only bodies that the eyes can see, and Allāh is not a body. If anyone sees Him, He will be a body; Allāh is not a body. Consequently, Allāh will not be seen. They interpreted the seeing reported in the Ḥadīth “you shall see your Lord” figuratively, as meaning knows about Him. They said that the Ḥadīth: “Verily, you shall see your Lord as you see the moon,” means that as you know for sure that the moon is the moon, without a doubt, you will come to know that Allāh is your lord. This is manifestly invalid because it nullifies the meaning.
